Reportage : adoBEST of ALL

BY : Jobert Mendoza

ADOBest of All

Considered as one of the national foods of our country. A food that can remind you of Filipino cuisine , and reminds you of a mother’s dish. This savory recipe is the epitome of balance, a beautiful blend of flavors that simply delight the taste buds. It gives you everything – sweet, sour, salty all wrapped in one amazing dish , so what’s not to love about it. It’s the comfort food of every Pinoy and is best enjoyed with heaping cups of rice. Thought loved by all, adobo, in some sense, has become a polarizing topic for sure you know what is it: Adobo

Adobo is usually served with rice, the staple food of us Filipinos, served hot with that rich brown sauce made from soy sauce, vinegar ,sugar, laurel , and pepper. It is also topped with some fresh circle onions and the meat where brown and juicy as it looks. I myself want to have food that is good in appearance and it also smells. With this I can say Adobo has it all

In terms of its texture I can say that every cut in each pork is indeed delicate and so juicy as you look at it. It also has very chewy pork because of the way adobo was prepared and boiled for about 15-20 minutes in order to bring out its flavor and juiciness. Sometimes I also want it to be a little dry that makes the pork more flavorful and juicier but I guess no matter how dry or more sauce your adobo is it is still a pinoy’s adobo

I can say that adobo’s smell is the smell that is okay to fill in my room because it makes me hungrier and makes me not lose my appetite maybe because of the balanced smell of every component of this adobo. The deep smell of glazed pork really matches,  as the salty and sour aromatic sensation of garlic, peppercorn and bay leaf swirled in the air and the smell of vinegar stung my nostrils. I can say that adobo has an adoboosting smell of all.

With this I can say that adobo is a perfect combo for rice because it is just so delicious, the richness of the sour and salty taste is balanced by the sweetness of sugar and an aroma of laurel. Indeed it is an adobest. Adobo I can describe it as one of the most flavorful foods that I have tasted, especially because the place where it is cooked is special.

The best place where I first tasted adobo and I am assuring that adobo in this place is one of the best is our home. Nothing will beat an homemade adobo. Those laughters while eating and loud shouts when ordering while preparing it is one of the best Ican and one last thing is that adobo can make us all burp and say Thanks the Lord because it really makes us full. No wonder why our rice cooker gets down when we have adobo.

I think that of all Filipino foods, adobo is the most versatile. With 7,100 islands, each of the Philippines’ regions has its own version of the adobo.  Every Filipino kitchen has its own adobo recipe and each version is unique on its own.  It is truly a Pinoy dish.I think that of all Filipino foods, the adobo is the most versatile. A True Filipino

Expository Direct Prompt by: Jobert Mendoza

In this era where communicating in a good way is a must to have a great connection, speaking the English language is a requirement for an individual to share with people of different nationalities. We all know that speaking English has been used by many of us, especially those working abroad or those who have a job that requires speaking English. But the question that should be given a clear answer is: Does speaking the English language make the Filipinos less of a Filipino? It is a no because speaking English is just a testament to us being versatile in speaking. We all know that being a Filipino will never be erased because the values and spirit of being a citizen of our country will still be overflowing.

Speaking the English language can give you a career opportunity here and abroad. That is why Filipinos are good at communication in English, and it is an international language that people speak all over the world. The English language is fundamental in how you write, read, and pronounce it very well. We are now in the modern age, and most people, not only Filipinos, can speak and understand the English language. In addition, I can say that speaking English will never lessen us being Filipino but rather increase because this will show how we value the importance of communication. It also shows how we love ourselves, our family, and our country. We intended to learn this language because we want to work outside the country or work that will require English speaking. It is just evidence that we value family because we work for them and enjoy the best for them.

Remember that speaking English will not make us less of a Filipino. It neither diminishes our sense of patriotism toward our fatherland, more so to our language. By using the lingua franca, we are unconsciously helping ourselves to become more productive citizens. We are allowing ourselves to talk to people of various colors, and thus we communicate to the world and say Hello, World! And through these ladies and gentlemen, we will eventually help our nation achieve globalization. Let us consider that English is stated in our constitution as our second language.

Hero in My Own Way

An Essay by: Jobert Menoza

Everyone is down, everyone is struggling because of these pandemic even us we and our store is having a hard time having because all the prices of the goods were rising, and we cannot spend time doing our travel or even just eating outside is really hard because of the protocol when the pandemic is just starting. But I can say that this makes me think of doing something like continuing my passion to cook but also thinking about sharing my food  with our frontliners.

I have actually loved cooking since I was in elementary school, maybe because of our bakery. I can remember one day that I asked my mother if I could just spend my birthday giving food for frontliners. I was actually thinking that it has been months since we started this fight in this pandemic and since we cannot celebrate it with many people I just decided to spend it with our frontliners. It was actually 5am in the morning September 9, I decided to go to the public market with my aunt and buy some vegetables, meat , noodles for pancit, we also got some bread and bottle water for a complete meal. We ended at 7am. I can say that I am kind of tired but I said that I should not let this stop me “focus ako sa goal para sa mga frontliners” I told myself. The next few hours my aunt and I started cooking pancit and prepared the bread and water. We finished everything at about 11am and decided to start giving it out by 12pm, good enough time to spend eating. It was so fun seeing every frontliner smile at us and say thank you. I can probably say that I may not have this grandest birthday celebration but it is one of the most meaningful.

This is just a testament that in every difficulty that we can encounter we can overcome it by helping one another. I hope that this story can inspire others to join us in our mission which is to deliver the best deeds in any aspect. One of the best traits that I saw during this pandemic is that every Filipino can be a change and deliver a positive impact to others

Bright Side

By: Jobert Mendoza

I am a journalist from grade 4 until now grade 12, I am also a radio broadcaster who has a dream of reaching National Schools Press Conference (NSPC) and also wanted to give something memorable before leaving my dear elementary school until high school but I guess I lost that battle because I was only a Division Schools Press Conference awardee and did not even went to the regional stage in all journalism competition.

I first started being a journalist when I was in grade 4 at Gloria Central School with my mentor Evangeline Alzate. It was actually a life changing decision for me to enter this type of competition. It was another skill added to mine. I started as a writer because this is where it all will start. I was able to learn different types of news from news stories, editorial, feature or even sports news which helps me a lot. I was not expecting to actually win at my first try but luckily I was able to grab 5th place for news writing and 3rd for feature writing this leads me to the DSPC where I ended up short and was only at 13th place not good enough to move on to the next competition. The next year I was moved to Radio broadcasting and accepted a bigger role to be its anchor I was so afraid at my first competition but one thing that is for sure is I enjoyed it, after this my adviser told me “Next year last year mo na kukunin na natin yung champion” this message actually boost me up to strive and practice more. Grade 6 my last year at school and all eyes are on us. We actually won in the District level and I was awarded as best anchor moving on to the DSPC. We came up short again and only placed second. It was really devastating since it is my last year , but I just have to let it go.

Then came my high school journey I am a part of Talabalita the official newspaper of OMNHS things are good in first place because I am not yet competing but after grade 7 and 8, I have realized that I still have some unfinished business with broadcasting so I decided to audition for Radio broadcasting which our school is known for because of its great caliber and history. It was a really big shoes to fill after the departure of Kuya Paolo Bukid the anchor, at my first try in high school we did not win and was not able to grab and medal so I said to our graduating members the Marinel Manimtim that we will fight better next year, so grade 10 4 of our members our graduating in the name of Kuya AC, Ate Samantha, Ate Sophia and Kuya Dilan we dedicated our best to win for our team to go Tagaytay because OMNHS radio broadcasting Filipino team has never been it that position so it will be history for us , but again we ended up as 3rd it was another heartbreaking moment for our team but our hopes did not stop us we practiced already after the competition and recruited but here comes the pandemic where all of our goals and dreams vanished like a bubble.

This is where I ended up my high school career as a broadcaster I may actually lose the battle to achieve our goal but there is one big win that we achieve our team Pasada Balita submitted an entry for National Campus Press Olympiad Opening BillBoard competition and luckily we was able to be recognized in the 6th best OBB in national and another win that I can say we had was the memories and learning we was able to gather all throughout my journey and I am sure that there are still more opportunities to come for me.

Critic! Critique! What is it?

In this society that we are living we often be a critic or a critique but the thing is in this case what do you think is needed to be possessed a critic or critique? What are its differences?  It is bad to be one of those two and do we really need to be that type of person? In the status quo that we are actually seeing, both of these two are evident especially in giving comments on movies, essays, poems and stories, for me this is not a bad thing to be considered because it will all boil down to how one individual will accept, or neglect it.

First we are going to differentiate both terms using a dictionary, and other resources. With the use of Cambridge dictionary a critic is a person whose job is to give an opinion about books, movies, or music and theater performances or a person who expresses disagreement with something or disapproval of someone while on the other hand a criticism or critical comment on some problem, subject, etc. which who give opinions or opinions in good and bad way in short a balanced opinion. With this I can say I am both a  critic and a critique.

Whether you are working on the first draft of your book, editing your short story, or experimenting with different forms of poetry, getting criticism from fellow writers (and readers) should be a regular part of your creative process. Let’s face it: anyone can put words on a page and call it a story, or divide those words up into stanzas and call it a poem. With this I can say that I am like a critique who gives appreciation to all the positives that I see and at the same time gives reviews or suggestions about things that I can see as not as good as the others. Being this kind of person is good to be honest because it is a way on how a writer can improve. But sometimes I can consider myself a critic who can also see bad things or sometimes just disagrees and not give my reason why.

We must all remember that in giving feedback or comments, be polite and be in the best manner in order for you to communicate better. There is nothing wrong with being any of these as long as you have and are shown for their work. We can also give constructive criticism which is easier to digest as a person. Constructive criticism is a valuable tool in the workplace that allows individuals to learn and grow. But quite often people don’t realize what a great resource it can be. The truth is, feedback and criticism can really help all of us succeed in the workplace and in life.

A Day to Remember Forever

A travelogue by : Jobert Mendoza

Photo Taken at Tagaytay

Happiness , enjoyment, unforgettable moments. This is how I can describe my one day trip from Antipolo to Tagaytay to Lemery Batangas. I can say it was a tiring day but it is with it. All smiles from the beginning until the last destination. Let me share with you my unforgettable day or even bring you to my experience.

A photo of me at Tagaytay

First stop Antipolo where we are staying at 4:00 am is our starting time. This is also the time where our service van will meet us, but of course because it is still very early our first thing to do is to sleep to gain energy for the whole day. And then lets go to our next stop tagaytay where we have a little stop over for a while to eat our breakfast, since we are two families we have different foods to share with everyone this is also one way to connect for me because I do not know that much about the other family. Going back to the food we have hotdogs, eggs and adobo, my favorite of course this is one food that will never be missed every outing that I am in. After eating in order to enjoy the nice weather and beautiful sceneries we went to different parts of the place.  There were ponds in that place, a church and we also went to skyranch afterwards. Our first stop was a little bit tiring already but in order to create more memories we decided to go on our next spot, Lemery Batangas.

Photo taken at the Gate to the Palace at Lemery Batangas

In lemery Batangas we went to see the kingdom like place where Fantastica film of Vice Ganda was taken this place is a great place and a highly recommended one because of the view that you can see from above the tower and also you can feel like a real royalty while you are in here. It is my first time visiting this place and I can say that if you want to see a view from above and see city houses or even observe clouds this is what I can recommend. We only have 45 minutes to see the whole place but that forty five was already enough. After the said time we went to our van and started to eat once again because it is already 2pm in the afternoon, we just did the same thing that we did for our lunch.

Photo outside the Palace

Afterwards we tried to go to another place where there are a lot of sunflowers but unfortunately it was not its season so we decided to just go back to skyranch to enjoy the whole place. We also tried different rides and even games and one part that I will never forget is the ice cream eating. After all of this we went back to Antipolo with smiles on our faces.

Using your time with your relatives will always be the best savoring event minute with them should be treasured and I hope that after reading this you will be able to spend time and went out with your family but always remember to keep safe.

Typhoon in Calapan

Published By: Jobert Mendoza

A Reportage about the Effects and Actions by Calapenos

With strong winds together with heavy rains brought by typhoons in Calapan that usually happens during August to November no wonder that there will always be flooding especially in places like Bucayao or even Canubing this is because of the low land where the said barangay are located.

These storms would usually have a big effect on the livelihood of each Calapeno because one of the most jobs here in our locality is farming or fishing. In addition to that typhoons here in Calapan usually will sometimes be  very bad when we are in the eye of the typhoon but sometimes just heavy rains. Usually this type of typhoons in Calapan can be prevented from causing damage because of the quick response and even ahead typhoon information dissemination. Local officials also usually take quick actions and go to every evacuation center when people evacuate and then bring relief goods in order to at least give the basic necessities of every Calapeno.

Mayor Arnan Panaligan before every typhoon will usually take actions and bring out announcements for students, parents and family. Also there will be a ready evacuation center when needed. During the said typhoon everyone will be advised not to go out and remain at their homes if they can but evacuate if they feel that there will be severe damage.

Day Full of Sadness

A Narrative Essay by: Jobert Mendoza

I do not know what is happening around, people wearing masks , some are running to the market to buy necessities and me just sitting on our sofa and feeling sad. If I can recall that was March but I cannot remember the exact date, my heart was shocked because I do not have anything to do. I am used to waking up early to go to school but all of this changes in just a blink of an eye.

On the first day of lockdown I was just in our home waiting for further announcement about school matters, especially because I am a grade 10 student who will be having a moving up ceremony. The sun was shining so nice and giving me hope that this pandemic will end easily because the said announcement is just one week away. Every plan for me for our remaining last days of school together with my SPJ family was ruined and we weren’t able to bond that much as we will end our junior high school journey and will face different strands. I can also recall that on that day together with my classmates we were just chatting in the group chat and talking about possibilities of things that can happen. While with regards to family we are just at home and observing everything happening around.

There no much things that happen that day because it is only one day but if I will tell the whole story until now I can describe this lockdown as my greatest challenge because I need to adapt to everything and cope with it. It was a up and down experience for me but until now one thing that we should do is to stay safe

Unfolding

An autobiography by Jobert Mendoza

September 9,2004 a new baby boy was born at Holy Cross Calapan at 5:05 in the afternoon, with a weight of 2900 grams. And yes that is me, Jobert Mendoza. My story was an adventure I can say because even at 9 months I had already been to 3 places; those are Dasmarinas Cavite where my parents are living, next is Calapan where I was born and third is in Maligaya Gloria where my story progresses. When I was 9 months I was adopted by my Tito and Tita because no one in my family can take care of me because my mother  named Mary Grace Mendoza still has a contract to be finished in Singapore while my father Joselito Mendoza is an ARMY. On the other hand my guardians, Leilany De Jesus and Jimmy De Jesus were once an owner of a bakery shop which seemed to be growing well until I was in grade 6.

With regards to educational background I was in the same school from kindergarten to grade 6 which is the Gloria Central School a school which is located very near our home.I was a consistent honor student when I was in elementary. I finished kindergarten as valedictorian and until grade 5 was a part of top 5, but things seemed to change when I was in grade 6 where a lot of problems came along. My tita having cancer and her wife leaving her during chemotherapy this changes my life because I have now to be independent and know how to adapt to the situation. I was sent to our neighbors for me to take care of but I was carried away with problems that I guess affected my academic and extracurricular performances making me end up in the top 11 during my elementary years.

As my tita continues to fight and survive I used her as my motivation to continue. To have a better guardian and home for me I was sent in my Lolo Nelson and Leila Casalla and transferred to my new school which is the OMNHS at first I never know someone but as time flies everything blooms I have a lot of experience some are painful and some are very good. I was also a consistent honor student since I got here and I can say that I did not make a decision to go to this school. Until now I am still a part of OMNHS Talabalita and The Tamaraw Newsette, the official publication paper of our school. I also represented our school in radio broadcasting, anchoring Pasada Balite, my journalistic career in high school may be painful because I was not able to reach NSPC I am still glad of the learning experience I was able to get.

Now that I will end my SHS life under Humanities and Social Sciences strand I am happy because I am still part of those honor students. After this I will be taking on the much bigger and harder life which is college life taking Political Science at Divine Word College of Calapan.

Moral Values and Impact of Short Story “Sinigang”

One thing that we can get in a short story is the moral values which we can apply in our daily life. Short stories can even change our perception about life because of the lessons that they can give to us. Sinigang by Marie Aubrey Villaceran gave me different values which I can use or apply in my life. This story made me realize many things especially about families.

The first thing that I learned in this story is to be faithful to your partner. Even if I don’t have a romantic relationship with anyone, I can still apply this lesson for the future specifically if I were to have a family. We can see in the story the effects of having an extramarital affair with another guy or woman. It can break trust, can destroy a relationship, can make someone suffer emotionally and can cause family problems which will highly affect the children. I actually know what it feels like to be in a family with an issue the same with the story. Those effects really happened in our family that is why I can really relate to the story. I even promised myself that I won’t commit adultery because I really know what it feels like to be a victim. You have to be sure of the person you are going to marry so your marriage will be successful amidst the other problems that you may encounter.https://www.youtube.com/embed/X2p2CdlIkQw?version=3&rel=1&showsearch=0&showinfo=1&iv_load_policy=1&fs=1&hl=en&autohide=2&wmode=transparent

Additional and related opinions about adultery or having an extramarital affair

They say that men in the Philippines are usually having an extramarital affair with another woman. What do you think are the reasons behind this?

I think some married men commit extramarital affairs because of lust and desire or lack of sexual satisfaction. They may not be content with their life with their wives and they may be unhappy in their current marriages. Some marriages are also not working or unsuccessful which leads the man to look for another woman. Maybe along their marriage life, intensive problems, misunderstanding, incompatibilities and fights happened which made men to feel exhausted and commit adultery. Whatever reason a person has, both man and woman, committing an extramarital affair is still a choice. You cannot say that it is not intended because before you commit this sin, you have a time to decide and people to remember.

They also say that it is ordinary in Filipino culture for husbands to look for another woman to satisfy their desires because they are men and not saints. How would you react to this?

It is common in the Philippines that husbands are committing adultery, but it is NOT a normal thing to do. Adultery will never be a right thing to do so why should we call it ordinary? It will never bring benefits for us aside from the specific satisfaction of the one committed adultery. Yes, men are men and even women are women. We are all people who commit mistakes, but the thing is, we have the chance to decide and we are taught simple things like we should not cheat. We have our own mind and we all know what is right and wrong. Adultery is a choice and we can never say “Hindi ko sinasadya”. There are consequences in every action that we do. Adultery can lead to broken families and hardly affect the children, it can break trust and it can trigger emotional volatility and extreme emotions for the one being cheated. Men are not saints, same with the women, but we should remember that we have  a chance to decide on our own and we have people and things to consider before deciding on a thing.

The second lesson that I learned in the story is giving respect, especially for elders, and being obedient. In the story, it showcases many Filipino traditions and one of these is respecting the elders. Liza still respected her aunt in the first part of the story. Even though she doesn’t like talking about her experience during the wake, she still answered all the questions that her aunt was asking. Liza also respected her father despite her distant relationship and resentment with her father. She even followed her mother to attend the wake of her half-brother because of her father’s request and this is where the obedience can be noticed. Another thing that I noticed is Liza’s respect for Sylvia. Her emotions became unstable at the time she met the woman, but still she didn’t lower herself to shout and disrespect the woman. I admired her for that. These two lessons motivated me to continue being respectful to anyone no matter what their age, status, gender and others, and to be obedient as long as that specific action will not bring danger to anyone.

The third lesson that I learned in this story is being strong and composed amidst the problem that we encounter. We all know that Liza is a daddy’s girl and she was hurt when she learned that her father cheated, yet she became strong in handling her problems in her family. She didn’t lashed out at her father even though she had grudges with him. She never gave up on her problems even though she was hurt. Maybe being rebellious is a way to calm and rest herself from her problems in the family. I can say that she is a strong independent woman which I admired about her. When she met Sylvia, she remained composed because she doesn’t like arguments and fights.

The last lesson that I learned is associated with the previous lesson. It is forgiving and moving forward. Forgiving is like freeing ourselves. It is freeing ourselves of negative feelings and emotions that we have to other people. It takes time to forgive, but we should never forget the lesson it taught us. We can rebuild what is lost little by little and learn to accept someone who made a mistake. Just like Liza who learned how to forgive her father and start new memories with him which means that deep inside, the love for her father didn’t vanish. Yes, there will be scars that will remain, but we have to realize that our life is not only about rainbows and flowers. This is the reality that people make mistakes even the kindest man you ever know. We should let go to our grudges to free ourselves. This lesson really taught me to forgive and to let go of my grudges against anyone. Just like now, I want a peace of mind so I decided to forgive my father and make his soul at peace too.

These are the lessons I learned in the amazing short story “Sinigang”. It will really teach every reader about the importance of having a strong foundation between family members, respecting, being strong, apologizing and forgiving especially to the Filipino families who are experiencing the same issue with the story.
